Egyptian Architecture in Indianapolis Pyramids

Driving through Northeastern Indianapolis, along Depauw Boulevard, near Michigan Road and 96th Street, three giant, glass structures loom dominantly in the landscape. Nestled neatly within a 200-acre commercial development in College Park, these pyramid-shaped buildings are home to approximately 45 acres of office space and situated on a 25-acre lake. As a prominent landmark of the state’s capital, The Pyramids offer world-class comforts and a plethora of opportunities for shopping, business, travel, lodging, and education. The Art Institute of Indianapolis is also located at the Pyramids. These reflections of a civilization long lost beneath the endless sands of the Sahara Desert stand to remind society of a great nation, rich in culture, that flourished along the banks of the Nile. But when and where did pyramids originate, and what significance did they play in the lives of the Egyptian people?

Renovations for the Indianapolis Museum of Art

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – When the Indianapolis Museum of Art contacted Digital AV about Scala InfoChannel® software, the Indiana based digital signage company knew it was in for an interesting artistic journey. Part of the $220 million expansion program under development at IMA included the vision for a dynamic visual greeting system for visitors and guests as they entered the new Glass Rotunda at the front of the Museum. The entrance was designed with exposed structural steel framework and a glass curtain wall system creating a large, open environment to welcome visitors. The problem was, the beautiful open area left visitors without a focal point of direction and, considering potential visitor counts in thousands for key events, IMA staff knew they had to pull the minds eye of the visitors to a central point of key information.

Enter Mike Prusa, Manager of IMA Ticketing and Visitors Division, who had seen digital signage used in other large museums throughout the country and knew it was exactly what the entrance needed to help guide their guests to the wide range of museum locations. A call to Tom Johnson, president of Digital AV, brought the museum in closer to their quest for a signage system that would do more than one thing at the same time. Johnson recommended three large digital displays, positioned together on a custom designed steel floor stand from Premier Mounts, with special mounting brackets for flexible positioning.

Shop the World in Indy, Broad Ripple

Jenny Elig: Village Experience | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star
From the moment you enter the Village Experience, the new addition to Broad Ripple and to the fair-trade shopping scene, you are in for a rare experience -- a shopping trip that will help you learn about the world.

The words painted over the door are as memorable as they are important: "The purpose of a life is a life of purpose."

It's the philosophy Kelly and Anne Campbell have adopted for the shop and their tourism business. It opened recently at 6055 N. College Ave. (on the other side of Der Glasswerks). The shop is a treasure trove of handmade accessories and home accent pieces made from materials indigenous to the places where they were made.

Better still, each time you nab a brilliantly dyed Thai silk scarf ($15), a necklace made of paper beads from Uganda ($32), or a clutch made from an Indian sari ($35), your money is going back to the villages where the pieces were created.

Prices range from $4 to $125 -- not bad at all for handmade pieces that each have a story behind them.

Indy, more than just a car race

Indy is full of surprises beyond race cars | Philadelphia Inquirer | 04/19/2009
INDIANAPOLIS - I knew the 13th-largest city in the country was a big sports town, home to the famed Indy 500 race and a full schedule of sporting events, including NCAA Final Fours in the next two years and Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 at the new Lucas Oil Stadium.

But not that it offers a green bike trail connecting cultural attractions in six neighborhoods. Or a world-class American Indian museum. Or the biggest children's museum in the country. Or an organic dairy and restaurant that sells to Whole Foods nationwide.

With a little legwork, it soon became clear that there was much more to this capital city of 1.6 million than auto racing and college and pro sports.

Once known as the Crossroads of America because of its location as a strategic railway hub, Indianapolis has reinvented itself since the mid-1970s, when it suffered from post-industrial malaise and urban blight. A concerted effort to reclaim green space, expand the convention center, and centralize cultural institutions has produced a solid array of attractions that drew 21.7 million visitors in 2006.

Indianapolis Travel Examiner: Indianapolis ARTSPARK twists the brain
A Walk around the Indianapolis Arts Center and the adjoining 12-acre ARTSPARK outdoor gallery is no ordinary walk in the park. For starters, installations dot the landscape. Constructed of manufactured and natural materials, these sculptures are meant to be experienced up close and personal. So go on in. Walk inside, and don't forget to look up, down and all around.

"Twisted House," a sculpture by Evansville artist (and Ball State grad) John McNaughton, is a masterful mind-bender.

Indianapolis Going Green

ibj.com Indianapolis Business Journal Clean energy initiative launches in Indianapolis
An economic development initiative around so-called clean technology was formally launched yesterday to further energize renewable energy projects and hybrid vehicle development under way in the state.

Energy Systems Network will be another economic development plank under Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, the parent of BioCrossroads, which promotes life sciences; Conexus, which promotes manufacturing and distribution; and TechPoint, which touts technology.

Energy Systems Network has garnered $1.5 million in private and institutional funding from partners including Duke Energy Corp., the Charlotte, N.C., utility that serves parts of Indiana among other areas.

The chairman of the energy initiative is Joe Loughrey, retiring vice chairman of Columbus-based Cummins Inc. The president and CEO of ESN is Paul Mitchell, former policy adviser on energy and economic and work-force development for Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Mitchell said the network is already pursuing two projects. Project Plug-IN is a demonstration to put plug-in electric vehicles on the road in central Indiana and to develop so-called smart grid infrastructure to charge them.

Indianapolis Extreme Home Makeover

'Extreme' Fans Take Part In Show Taping - Indiana News Story - WRTV Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis fans of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" got a chance to be part of a show taping Monday as workers hurriedly built a home for recipient Bernard McFarland.

Host Ty Pennington and the rest of the crew went to Arsenal Tech High School Monday to shoot the show's open, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

McFarland has made it a life-long mission to foster the love of reading and education in children. He was inspired by a librarian, so it was fitting that the school's library temporarily became a TV studio for the show's taping.

"He believes through the power of education, anything is possible," Pennington said as cameras rolled. "The renovation starts right now."

Numerous families gathered to surround Pennington for the shoot and observe the taping.

"I know how it helps others," said 12-year-old Bailey Ransburg. "It's just funny and it's a good, family show."

Through the magic of edition, the show open will show children who love to read transforming into the people they want to be when they grow up -- doctors, firefighters, educators.

"It was fun. You had to wait for a little while," said Syndey Huffman. "When you actually got in it, it was really fun."

The Indianapolis episode will the season finale for the show. It's set to air on ABC on May 17.

"It's going to be really exciting and different for a change," said Dallas Jenkins, who is featured in the open.

Indianapolis Library Convention

ibj.com Indianapolis Business Journal Indianapolis books big library convention
The Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association said today that it has booked the Chicago-based American Library Association’s 2021 annual midwinter meeting.

The group will use every meeting room in the Indiana Convention Center, as well as all meeting rooms in surrounding hotels, ICVA said.

The ALA holds its midwinter meeting in January. It is estimated that members will spend $11.6 million here and book 18,585 hotel-room nights.

The group’s most recent Midwinter Meeting, in Denver from Jan. 23-28, drew more than 10,000 attendees for about 2,000 meetings and events, the ALA said.

ICVA said it was particularly pleased to land such a large January event. The month is usually a slow one for big conventions.

Large organizations such as the ALA reserve convention space many years in advance. Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Diego and Seattle are among the cities hosting future ALA midwinter meetings.

Indianapolis’ convention-center expansion and the new 1,300-room JW Marriott hotel complex, both scheduled to be completed next year, were integral in landing the convention. Without the developments, the city would not have met the minimum criteria to host the group, ICVA president and CEO Don Welsh said.

“As a result of the Indiana Convention Center expansion, the new hotel package and the continued enhancements of our downtown facilities, the American Library Association is the type of customer we are now able to attract,” Welsh said via e-mail. “It is our furthest booking out, and we’re thrilled to have them in Indianapolis for the first time in their history.”

The not-for-profit ALA was founded in Philadelphia in 1876 and has 65,000 members, including librarians, library trustees and publishers. It serves public, state, school and academic libraries, in addition to specialty libraries for institutions such as the armed services, hospitals and prisons.

Flying Scupture

Giant sculpture airlifted over Indiana - UPI.com
INDIANAPOLIS, March 23 (UPI) -- Officials with the Indianapolis Museum of Art said a massive sculpture on loan to a nearby school had to be lifted by air to its destination.

Richard McCoy, objects conservator for the museum, said Sasson Soffer's 1973 sculpture "East Gate/West Gate," which measures 40 feet high and 30 feet long, was too massive to move by truck to the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus Sunday so a helicopter was called in to hoist the art into the sky, the Indianapolis Star reported Monday.

"We could have taken it apart and put it on a truck, but that would have been even more complicated," McCoy said. He said officials calculated that the aerial move was also cheaper than the more grounded alternative.

Planning for Super Bowl XLIII

Indianapolis plans for heavy Super Bowl traffic | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star
After two years of intense planning, Tampa, Fla., officials thought they had everything under control for Super Bowl XLIII.

A 100-page master plan for this year's event called for lining the highways with 300 special signs, 4,000 traffic cones and 180 heavy-duty barricades -- all in an effort to keep thousands of cars and buses moving smoothly. But nobody planned for the impact of Leather and Laces, a pregame party that promised plenty of celebrities and not much clothing.

When thousands showed up, streets became so clogged that traffic stalled and a key bridge to downtown Tampa went into gridlock.

"You cannot underestimate these parties," said Mike Scanlon, a traffic engineer for the city of Tampa. "Things can get out of hand pretty quickly."

Three years before the biggest annual sporting event in the world takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis officials have been studying the lessons of Tampa, Phoenix and other host cities, hoping to avoid a foul-up that could mar the Circle City's moment in the spotlight.

The Indy Hostel is the coolest affordable lodging in Indy. Thank you again for extending such hospitality during my stay. 'Twas a fun, warm introduction to the city, I'll be back.
