New Broad Ripple High School baseball coach Herb Teal discovered just how much attitudes toward the sport have changed in Indianapolis Public Schools over the three decades on the first day of practice:

None of his players had cleats.

"The opportunities for African-American kids (in baseball) are slim," said Teal, 51, who bought spikes for his 15 varsity players. "It saddens me because there’s no inner-city Little League like when I was growing up. Back then, you couldn’t wait to play against your buddy from down the street."
